Genius Ring Mouse slips around your finger, cues up Beyonce jams

Genius quietly introduced the Ring Mouse back at Computex, but little was said about the curious critter up until last week. Our pals over at Engadget Spanish managed some alone time with the device at IFA, and while we can't imagine any long-term mouse user being able to grasp this (mentally, not physically) without first overcoming a steep learning curve, those more accustomed to cellphone optical pads may be in good shape. Put simply, the ring has an optical trackpad ("Opto Touch Wheel") and an embedded 2.4GHz wireless model; wearers use their thumb to navigate the cursor, while miniature left / right click buttons do exactly what you'd expect. There's still nary a word on price, but here's hoping that we can wrap our hands -- er, something -- around this in the not-too-distant future.

Samsung and Intrinsity Jointly Develop New ARM Cortex A8 Processor

This Cortex-A8 implementation, code-named Hummingbird, delivers 2000DMIPS at 1GHz. The Hummingbird comes with 32KB each of data and instruction caches, an L2 Memory cache, the size of which can be customized, and an ARM NEON multi-media extension. Performance and power consumption of the Hummingbird have been validated in silicon.

A multi-Vdd / multi-frequency design methodology was used to ensure the Hummingbird can run at a high speed even at the minimum supply voltage of 1.0V. The low power consumption and the high operating clock performance make the Hummingbird an ideal processor core for use in advanced mobile devices.

Alnect Komputer : Already available in Symbian, Android and Windows Mobile OS, Goolge has just announced its Google Latitude for Apple iPhone. It is currently available for users in US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The iPhone version of the friend location sharing is not a native application but released as a web application. You can visit google.com/latitude from your iPhone’s web browser, and add a bookmark of the page to your home screen. While this application will be useful to share your location with others, the iPhone edition will not run in the background and you will have to open the web application everytime you want to update your location.

Our Latitude web app provides all the core functionality you might expect: you can see the location of your friends on a map and modify your privacy settings so that you control how your location is shared and with whom. In fact, if my friends and colleagues back in London haven’t yet noticed my absence, they’ll see in Latitude that I’m currently vacationing on the beach in Australia. Hi guys, remember me!?

We worked closely with Apple to bring Latitude to the iPhone in a way Apple thought would be best for iPhone users. After we developed a Latitude application for the iPhone, Apple requested we release Latitude as a web application in order to avoid confusion with Maps on the iPhone, which uses Google to serve maps tiles.

Alnect Komputer : Back in our initial unboxing and overview of the HTC Hero, we tongue-in-cheek suggested that it could be the best Android smartphone to date. Having spent more time with it, that cavalier prediction is looking highly accurate. Android’s flexibility is, arguably, one of its biggest stumbling blocks; out of the box there’s little to guide a new owner through the platform’s capabilities. By introducing Sense, however, HTC have made the Hero instantly usable, and they’ve done so not with the bare minimum of app investment but with a range of programs that offer up-to-date functionality like social network integration.

Best of all, HTC’s dedication to developing Sense and treating UI as a long-haul process rather than a short-term prettification exercise gives us hope that the few shortfalls and omissions we’re currently seeing in version one of the Hero will be addressed over time. It’s reassuring to know that not only is the Hero a great smartphone but that it’s only likely to get better as HTC continue their tweaks. o Remote Wipe. IT Administrators can remotely erase all data on a phone from their Exchange console. IT administrators can also have the device wipe itself if an incorrect password is entered more than a specified number of times.

Messaging

* You can enter emoticons in new text, multimedia, and instant messages. Emoticons also display in incoming messages.
* If you set the phone to use a 24-hour time format, the message times shown in a conversation appear in 24-hour time.
* If you go into an IM account’s preferences, all the options are available even if you are signed in to the account. Nissan looking to give an inductive charge to its upcoming Zero Emissions Vehicle

Alnect Komputer : It won't be quite the same as putting a Palm Touchstone under your tire -- although that's quite the mental image -- but Nissan's thinking big and planning to apply that same inductive charging technology for its upcoming five-seat Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV). As envisioned by the company, the ideal scenario would be to drive into a compatible charging bay and power up without the need to haul around a plug like current EV owners do -- Nissan Europe's Larry Haddad estimates a 25 minute shopping trip could be enough to refill the battery back up to 80 percent.

In an admittedly more far-fetched case, the company said it's scientifically feasible to have charging plates buried just under the surface of the road for on-the-go charging. With realities like money and practicality in the way, we can't imagine that example to fruition anytime soon. In the meantime, we've still gotta wait until August to even gather a glimpse of the ZEV -- maybe by then we'll get a better idea of Nissan's plans for the technology.

Alnect Komputer : Nokia and Accenture have entered into an agreement for Accenture to acquire Nokia’s Symbian Professional Services unit responsible for Symbian OS customer engineering and customer support. The unit provides engineering consulting and product development services on a global basis to mobile phone manufacturers, as well as chip manufacturers and mobile operators.

Services provided by the Symbian Professional Services teams include advanced technical support, techniques for enhancing performance, memory, and power, advanced error diagnosis and repair, and turnkey software development services that can be used in a range of technical environments.

Approximately 165 people will transfer to Accenture as a result of the agreement. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close by the end of third quarter 2009.

LG Announces its Application Store

LG today announced that it will launch a beta version of their online application store on July 14, 2009, which will be first introduced in Asia with the service being expanded to 24 countries. LG expects to offer up to 2,000 applications on its site by the end of year with at least 100 programs available free of charge to LG handset users. To access the LG Application Store, users can either visit www.lgapplication.com and download applications to a computer or directly access the shop from LG-GM730 by flicking horizontally on the “Quick Key Box” at the bottom of the home screen and tapping the App icon.

The results of a recent consumer survey conducted in North America by ABI Research suggest that nearly half of those mobile consumers surveyed are somewhat likely or very likely to be influenced by suppliers’ green credentials when purchasing services or devices.

Respondents were asked whether they’d be more likely to purchase mobile services or mobile handsets from an operator that makes use of ‘green’ initiatives, which were described as:

“…gives money to organization seeking to help the environment, actively employs programs that reduce its carbon footprint, buys network equipment from ‘green’ equipment vendors.”

Paying more than just lip service, 41% (for services) and 45% (for devices) of the 1,000+ respondents indicated that they’d be significantly or somewhat more likely to do so. Younger consumers showed a greater willingness to pursue “eco-groovy” mobile activities than older ones.

“Wireless operators take notice,” says senior analyst Jeff Orr. “Green issues were not even a talking point a couple years back. Now, subscribers of all age groups are expressing awareness of and interest in eco-friendly device and service incentives.”

The service providers first to connect with environmentally conscious businesses and consumer subscribers will have an edge in this growing trend. Additional education remains necessary to communicate issues surrounding battery disposal and the accumulation of e-waste.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global Android smartphone shipments will grow 900 percent in 2009. Healthy support from operators, vendors and developers is driving adoption. Apple iPhone OS will be the next fastest-growing smartphone operating system in 2009, with a 79 percent growth rate.

Tom Kang, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, “We forecast global Android smartphone shipments to grow an impressive 900 percent annually during 2009. The Android mobile operating system from Google gained early traction in the United States in the second half of 2008 and it is gradually spreading its presence into Europe and Asia during 2009. Apple ranks highest in customer satisfaction with smartphone manufacturers, while LG ranks highest among traditional mobile phone users, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Wireless Consumer Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study and the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Wireless Traditional Mobile Phone Satisfaction Study.

The studies measure customer satisfaction with traditional wireless handsets and smartphones across several key factors. In order of importance, key factors in examining traditional wireless handsets are operation (30%); physical design (30%); features (20%); and battery function (20%). Among residential smartphone owners, key factors are ease of operation (30%); operating system (22%); features (21%); physical design (18%); and battery function (9%).

Apple ranks highest among smartphone manufacturers with a score of 791 on a 1,000-point scale, performing particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features and physical design. LG (772) and Samsung (759) follow Apple in the rankings.

Among traditional handsets, LG ranks highest in overall wireless customer satisfaction with a score of 733, performing well across all factors. Sony Ericsson follows with 712.

LG Secret Going to AT&T as LG CF750?

According to the approval documents from FCC, the LG Secret is being prepared for AT&T in US, featuring a fashion design in a slider form factor. Both AT&T and LG have not announced the LG Secret for AT&T yet. The documents has indicated AT&T software features like AT&T GPS, AT&T Music, MEdia Net and MEdia Mall. The slider should have the same specs as last year releases, including a 5 megapixel camera, bluetooth, office document viewer and DivX playback.

LG announced today Viewty Smart (LG-GC900), a new 8 megapixel camera phone with sensitivity up to ISO 1600 and an Intelligent Shot Mode that will automatically analyzing scenes and adjusting camera settings accordingly. LG Aims to Sell 10 million LG Cookies This Year

Available since October 2008, LG announced today that its affordable full touchscreen handset, LG Cookie (LG-KP500), recorded over two million unit sales worldwide. More than 1.2 million gourmets have had a taste of LG Cookie in Europe, and 600,000 Cookies have been sold in Asia and the emerging markets, including Latin America.

In Korea, LG Cookie is currently the most popular handset with 100,000 units in accumulated sales as of March this year and record one-day sales of 4,500 units. The company plans to expand Cookie’s availability from 40 to 60 countries as part of its push to hit 10 million in sales worldwide.

Nokia Life Tools pilot shows high appeal for livelihood and life improvement services in India

Nokia recently concluded the pilot phase of its pioneering Life Tools service in Maharashtra, India, and the results show that subscribers are reaping the benefits. Nokia Life Tools will launch commercially India-wide in the first half of 2009. The service will be enabled in the Nokia 2320 and Nokia 2323, which will soon begin shipping, and on more devices to be announced later in the year.

Users of the Agriculture Service described that they were better informed about market rates for their produce. Farmers found that getting prices daily on their mobile phones reduced their dependency on agents for basic information. Now with greater awareness on market conditions, there was newfound confidence in their negotiations with the agents. There was also resounding appreciation for the time and money saved from not having to make multiple trips to the market place to get the latest rates.

Benefitting from the Agriculture service also related to having advanced information about weather, news and crop advisory services like information about probable diseases, weather based disruptions and tips for more successful harvests. Farmers could plan labour, sowing, harvesting and selling better, and with more predictable results than they were able to before they started using Life Tools.

The pilot program of Nokia Life Tools in India was launched in December 2008, with services in Agriculture, Learn English, General Knowledge and Astrology. During the pilot period, buyers of the Nokia 2600 classic or the Nokia 1680 classic - which came enabled with the service - had the option to purchase subscriptions to the Nokia Life Tools services that were most relevant to them. Results showed that a significant number of subscribers had signed up for approximately two of the services on average, reflecting that the services were relevant to a wide cross-section of the society.

Sony Ericsson Idou Available in October 2009

During the press announcement in Mobile World Congress two months back, Sony Ericsson did not have a confirmed released date for its Idou touch screen phone but only said due for second half of the year. Gustaf Brusewitz from Sony Ericsson Sweden has told mobil.se that it will be available in either October or November, which is almost the end of year 2009 for christmas season.

It is to the german WEB site Teltarif Sony Ericsson’s german product and pr manager now has given more details about the rumoured super mobile from Sony Ericsson.

- Idou is the project name for the first phone model. The focus for this project and the promis behind it is “Unlimited entertainment”. It is much more than just picture and music functions, for instance games, social networks or complete video services says Sony Ericsson’s german product manager Steffen Grosch.

More models in the series with focus on “unlimited entertainment” as in Idou are also on the way, according to Sony Ericsson’s german product manager.

Sony Ericsson Idou will have Symbian’s new operating system, which among other things is based on Nokia’s Series 60 and Sony Ericsson’s UIQ. The system will according to Symbian be complete around the summer.

Idou will also have a 12 MP camera, built-in GPS and a large 3.5″ touch screen.

According to german Sony Ericsson Idou will be available in October, but not later than November. According to Gustaf Brusewitz on Swedish Sony Ericsson however, the only information provided is that Idou will be available “sometimes during the second half of this year.”

Rumor: Next BlackBerry Storm 2 Got WiFi Enabled

While the BlackBerry Storm is still exclusively available for CDMA network, sources of slashgear is estimating the released of BlackBerry Storm 2 for Verizon Wireless network by September this year.

Archos 2 and Archos 4 flash players leak out

We haven't heard anything official, but images of an Archos 2 flash player have turned up in a few places on the web today, along with word of an Archos 4. The 2's already listed on Amazon -- it's not going to rock worlds, but it's not bad for $60, with 8GB of storage and microSD expansion, a 1.8-inch 128 x 160 display and a voice recorder all in a .035-inch thick package. There's also a 16GB version on Amazon.de for €68 ($92), but that hasn't yet made it to the US Amazon site. The Archos 4 is a little more mysterious -- all we really know about it is that it'll have a four-inch screen and 16 to 32GB of flash. We're guessing these'll pop soon, we'll let you know.

Apple iPhone 2009 Concept Design

I drooled at the idea of an iPhone Pro with slide keyboard and big honkin' camera, but let's face it: It's probably never going to happen. So—using logic—what will the next iPhone look like?

Probably something like this: A flatter, even more tapered and slender version of the current one. After all, if you have a winning formula, why radically change it?

Matt says that he would be disappointed if it ends being something like this, just a version of the current model. I'm going to be pessimist and expect just an evolution of the current design. The market keeps growing with what they have now, so it won't make sense for them to go through a radical design change just yet. And besides this point, there are at least three generations of smooth evolution and tweaks in Apple hardware designs until something completely new comes along (witness the iMacs, for example.)

Not that it really matters: As long as they include a bigger camera sensor while reducing the thickness to iPod touch levels, I'd be happy. But who knows, perhaps there will be a radical departure. What do you think? Do you have any original idea? Send it to us.

Samsung Korea Announces Haptic 8M W740 Camera Phone

Featuring a 8 megapixel camera, Samsung has released its new camera phone, the Haptic 8M SCH-W740 in Korea this week. The model is using the TouchWiz UI, there is haptic feedback for each touch input on the 3.3-inch touch screen. Interestingly, there is a new software called Face-Tagging pre-installed on the phone. The software will identify people in the photos by matching the contact profile photo. You can then select to send text message or call the person from the photo gallery. iriver E50 gets unboxed, reviewed

iriver's E50 PMP has had a bit of a roundabout launch since it first appeared on the scene back in December, but it looks like it's now finally available in at least a few parts of the world, and the folks at Le Journal du Geek have promptly gotten their hands on one and done the full unboxing and review honors. As was pretty clear from the early shots, this one's a sleek little device and, while it doesn't exactly pack a whole slew of features, it looks to perform all the basic tasks with welcome simplicity.

On the downside, the 1.8-inch screen apparently leaves a bit to be desired, especially when playing videos and, while the included earphones are a tad better than the usual fare, the sound quality from the player itself is apparently just average. The new service will launch with over 500 titles from top studios Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal and Momentum Pictures. By the end of the first quarter of 2009 a further 500 titles will be added, followed by an additional 1,000 movies and TV shows by the end of June 2009. There are also plans to expand this service to notebooks, mp3 and mp4 players and Samsung TVs. Samsung Movies start from �2.49 for 24 hour rental or from �4.99 to own.
